About Me

I am Priscila Medrado Costa, the author of English Magicbox. This blog was born several years ago to be a space where I can share my teaching experience, tips for other teachers, some personal thoughts about education, and also teaching materials.

I am from Brazil and have been teaching English as a second or foreign language since 2007. In Brazil, I taught at a language center. I had students of all ages, from preschoolers to adults. They were also at different levels of English language proficiency and had various objectives for their learning of the language.

I moved to the U.S. in 2012, and since then, I have taught at an Intensive English Program (IEP) at a large state university. In that IEP, most of my students have been young adults from all over the world preparing to go into undergraduate or graduate programs in American institutions. I also taught ESL for two nonconsecutive semesters at public elementary schools in a large urban school system. There, I taught K-5 students whose home languages were other than English.

My initial academic area was Speech-Language Pathologist and Audiologist, but some years ago I found myself passionate about teaching and learning, so I also have an In-service Certificate in English Language Teaching (ICELT) by the University of Cambridge, a Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) and a Master’s in English – Teaching English for Specific Purposes both from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC). With that, I am a certified North Carolina teacher of English as a second language.

I am currently preparing for a new academic and professional challenge, which I will share in another opportunity.
